Why This Matters to You
Here's the thing that catches people out when they replace a hot water system: a gas unit needs electricity.
This job in Greenwith was a weatherproof powerpoint for a brand new instantaneous gas hot water unit, in a spot where there was no power supply anywhere nearby. Straightforward work, but it's the single most common reason a hot water changeover stalls on the day.
Why a Gas Unit Needs a Powerpoint
An old gas storage system typically ran on a standing pilot light. A small flame burned continuously, so when the thermostat called for heat there was already a flame to light the burner. No electricity involved anywhere.
A continuous flow unit works differently. There's no stored tank and no pilot. When you turn on a hot tap, the unit senses the flow, opens the gas, ignites electronically and modulates the burner to hold the temperature you asked for. All of that sensing, ignition and control needs power.
So the moment you go from an old storage unit to a continuous flow one, you need a powerpoint in a place that has probably never had one, on the outside of the house. That isn't a fault in the new unit. It's just a consequence of how it works, and nobody mentions it when you're choosing between models.
It isn't the Plumber's Job
Your plumber installs the unit, connects the gas and does the water. The powerpoint is electrical work and needs a licensed electrician.
That split is where changeovers go wrong. The plumber arrives, removes the old unit, mounts the new one, and then finds there's nothing to plug it into. Now you have no hot water and you're waiting on a second trade, which can easily be days.
If you're replacing a hot water system, ask one question up front: does the new unit need power, and is there a suitable outlet where it's going? If the answer to the first is yes and the second is no, book both trades for the same day or get the outlet in beforehand.
Outside Means Weatherproof
Hot water units live on an external wall, so the outlet is a weatherproof one with a sealing lid rather than an ordinary indoor point, and it's on an RCD-protected circuit like any other outlet.
Position takes a bit of thought. It has to be reachable so the unit can actually be unplugged and isolated for service, clear of the flue and the hot parts of the casing, and clear of the gas fittings and the water connections. Far enough away to be sensible, close enough that the unit's own lead reaches without strain, which usually means agreeing the spot with the plumber before anything is mounted.
If Your Hot Water Is on Its Way Out
Hot water systems rarely fail conveniently. If yours is getting old, it's worth finding out now what a replacement would need, because the decision usually gets made in a hurry on a cold morning.
Two minutes of checking, whether there's an outlet near the unit and whether it's weatherproof, is the difference between a one-day changeover and a three-day one.
